The Dynatel 500A Cable Locator is a portable, battery powered tone set that locates and traces the path of buried or underground cables. It will detect radio frequency (RF) and audio frequencies (AF) applied to a conductor by the transmitter. It will also detect 60 Hz alternating current (AC) using the receiver alone. The 500A will accurately indicate the depth of buried or underground cables. It provides a high frequency RF tone for positive conductor or cable identification and an AF tone for common ground cable and extended distance locating. The 500A locates cables without having to take them out of service. The cable locator consists of a transmitter, a receiver and accessory items (see photo 1). The transmitter and receiver cases are made of high density polyethylene for light weight and high durablilty. The cases are bright yellow for high visibility. Both cases are water resistant. For compact storage, the receiver and accessories fit into the transmitter case (see photo 4). To preserve battery life, "OFF" switches are activated on both the transmitter and receiver when the receiver is placed in the transmitter case. This 500A is very clean and is in very good physical condition. It looks like it hasn't been used very much. All of the accessories and the operating instruction manual are included (see photo 1). A stainless steel ground rod is located in the transmitter case lid. I have had several questions regarding what testing has been done on this cable locator. To clarify, I have not tested it on any cables. The transmitter and the receiver both power up. The transmit tones can be heard in the receiver in both RF and Audio modes. Also, with the receiver in Power Cable mode, 60 Hz AC power cables can be detected. Regarding the batteries, the transmitter uses 4 standard 6 Volt carbon-zinc "lantern" cells. These batteries test good. The receiver uses 4 standard 9 Volt "transistor radio" batteries. These batteries also test good.
