A bad piston valve can cause your sprayer to work much harder than it is designed for. If it is totally worn your pump will not suck up paint at all. That degree of damage ought to be visible on the seating bevel and the seating ball, inside the rod. Damage can be difficult to see without a magnifying glass-and knowing what, exactly, to look for. But, nearly any level of damage can be detected if your pump is producing good pressure, but bleeds off- when not triggered. Movement of the piston upward, after the gun trigger is released, unit attains full pressure and shuts off; means that the piston valve is leaking. In situations where your pump is NOT making pressure, a bad or jammed-up valve can be detected by watching for a violently pulsating high pressure airless hose line, or pulsating material flow out of the outlet if no hose is attached. A pump can operate with a minimally worn valve, but it will shortly be working the entire sprayer much harder than it should be. While packings, rods and cylinders are often seen as the major wear parts, many times the outlet valve is often overlooked and the sprayer just seems to breakdown more and more frequently.
