Complete details, information and additional pictures may be seen here: http:// /mercury_products.html Many were taught to make their hand-made mercury traps so the “bubble†hangs down like a pot-bellied pig instead of making a nice, round ball or sphere. The normal pumping procedure is to delicately and slowly open the main vacuum stopcock in an attempt to keep the mercury from being sucked out of the trap. It is generally misconstrued that if the bubble hangs down it will help to keep the mercury in the trap and from being sucked out of the bubble. However, this configuration actually HELPS the mercury to be sucked out of the bubble! Here’s why: The more uneven the bubble is and the more the “side arms†of the trap are out of alignment with the center of the bubble (the pot-bellied pig look), the more turbulence there will be in the bubble when air is pulled through the trap. The more turbulence there is the greater chance there is of sucking the mercury out of the trap and into the manifold. If the trap is a round sphere with the side arms aligned with the center of the bubble the air will pass through the bubble with little turbulence. The less turbulence there is the less chance there will be of the mercury being sucked out of the trap. It is easy to do your own test to confirm this: Make two home-made traps; one with the bubble hanging down and one that is nice and round with the side arms aligned. See which one the mercury is disturbed in the most when the main vacuum stopcock is opened. With our Reusable Mercury Traps, because they are made of larger diameter tubing for even less turbulence, the main vacuum stopcock can literally be opened as fast as possible and the mercury will NOT be sucked out of the trap! (We do this all the time on our manifold, which has a 20mm main stopcock connected to a 650 liter/min. vacuum pump). The larger diameter also improves pumping speed. We have been using these in our shop for over 10 years. We could not even begin to calculate how much labor time and materials these have saved us since we started using them.
