Heavy-duty vertical shaping head for horizontal mill

Heavy-duty vertical shaping head for horizontal mill
Here’s a brand new vertical shaping head, built, I believe, to go on a horizontal milling machine. There is no indication of the manufacturer’s name on this unit. I had to clean the Cosmoline off to get the photos – it clearly has never been used before. As you can see from the photos, the general construction is very rugged. The stroke is fairly short, about 1-3/4”, and not adjustable for stroke length. The slide takes a 5/8” round-shanked tool. The head tilts up to 45 degrees to either side. On the drive end, the shank is a No. 4 Morse taper, and the end of the shank is tapped for a 5/8”draw bar thread. The three holes for ½” bolts on the mounting flange are on an 8” bolt circle. The Morse taper shaft drives a very simple crank mechanism and probably wouldn’t be hard to modify to another type shank if needed. The crank mechanism turns over easily by hand. This head needs to locate on a 6” diameter round boss and be firmly bolted to the vertical face of the mill in order to resist the upward cutting force.
