Diesel fuel has a much longer shelf life than gasoline, is not dangerous like propane or natural gas, and diesel is cheaper as it can be purchased for off road use, no tax when not in a vehicle. A diesel generator will operate on half the fuel per KW as a gasoline or propane generator. The cheap gas and propane units sold in home improvement stores are for standby power only. They are made for use during intermittant power outages which are for a couple of hours at a time. You will be lucky to get 700 to 1000 hours before they are in need of major repairs.
